FIRST® programs engage students in STEM learning and preparing them for the future through hands-on fun while helping kids transfer STEM, Coding and Business concepts to real-world applications.  You’ll also have the support of the FIRST Canada Community, including other coaches and mentors, volunteers and alumni who are eager to share their knowledge, resources, and insights. Students, Parents and Teachers can  explore ways in which to meet STEM learning objectives  through the integration of FIRST programs with the curriculum. Listed below is information on the programs and resources available to you.

Running FIRST programs during COVID-19: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we anticipate that teams will encounter unique challenges during the FIRST® GAME CHANGER powered by Star Wars: Force for Change season and we are here to provide support and guidance for navigating these scenarios. When meeting with teams in person, coaches and mentors are now faced with new expectations around cleaning and working with shared materials within their educational and extracurricular spaces.  The recommendations included here should be used for guidance only and all teams should adhere to their local government and public health guidelines.

Teacher and Mentor Information Sessions and Resources

FIRST LEGO League Discover is a playful introductory STEM program for teams of children ages 4-6, that ignites their natural curiosity and builds their habits of learning. By the end of the program, children emerge more confident, better equipped to face future challenges, and discover the joy of learning.   A new and exciting Challenge is presented every year, and each team of upto four children begins their exploration of this real-world theme with an exclusive LEGO Education Discovery Set. With this set as a starting point, they build a solution to the Challenge with LEGO® DUPLO® elements. Teams share their journey, ideas, models, and STEM skills at a celebration event. Throughout their experience, teams operate under the FIRST® Core Values, celebrating discovery and teamwork, all the while having fun!

Bring FIRST LEGO League Discover program through our Class Packs that provide facilitators with the tools and resources to lead early learners through 10 sessions as they explore STEM through play using the LEGO® Education STEAM Park.

What does a Class Pack Include:

  • 1 Team Meeting Guide: Comprehensive guide provides facilitators with guidance and lesson plans on how to run 10 sessions and end with a culminating celebration. It includes student outcomes, handy tips, suggested tasks, and questions. >View a sample  
  • 30 Engineering Notebooks: These printed student workbooks provide open spaces to write and draw ideas to the provided prompts. One page of the notebook is filled in during two classes and children can use their engineering notebooks at their final event to share what they created. >View a sample  
  • 7 PLAYMAKERS Discover Sets: These sets include an exclusive set of LEGO® DUPLO® elements students will use as a starting point to explore how STEM relates to their world as they create an obstacle course.   
  • 30 Discover More Parent Engagement Sets: LEGO Six Bricks take-home sets for each student to extend and reinforce their habits of learning at home.

Standard Alignment to Curriculum

The program builds a strong foundation for computational thinking and engineering skill development with in-classroom and structured, after-school options as well as individual team options. Teams of students, ages 6-10, focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0. Each year in early August, FIRST LEGO League Explore releases a new Challenge for teams that focuses on a scientific topic. Students are sent on a journey of discovery to learn all they can about the topic, then present their findings in the form of a team poster and a LEGO model that moves

What does a Class Pack Include

  • Class Pack Festival Guide: This digital guide provides guidance, management tips, and best practices for how to implement FIRST LEGO League Explore in the classroom and instructions on how to run your own festival in your classroom or school.
  • 1 Team Meeting Guide:  This comprehensive guide is printed and also available digitally through the FIRST Thinkscape Portal and provides facilitators with guidance and lesson plans on how to run 12 sessions and prepare for a culminating celebration. It includes student outcomes, tips, guiding questions, sharing guidance, and clean up pointers. >View a sample
  • 30 Engineering Notebooks:  These student workbooks are used to record ideas, notes, and sketches – printed versions of the books are included with Class Pack and School Pack, and new this year, static and interactive versions are available digitally through the FIRST Thinkscape Portal. It provides a guided 12-session experience, including an introduction activity, session tasks, and concluding with the team sharing what they learned and accomplished. >View a sample

Standard Alignment to Curriculum

Teams of students, ages 9-14, engage in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering to build and program a LEGO robot that navigates and completes missions on a themed playing field and to develop an innovative solution to a real-world problem in preparation for an end-of-season competition.

FIRST® Class Packs help facilitators guide their students through 12 sessions as they develop, design, build and code a LEGO® robot that completes missions as part of the robot game and develop an innovation project solution to a real-world problem.

  • Class Pack Tournament Guide:  This digital guide provides guidance, management tips, and best practices for how to implement FIRST LEGO League Challenge in the classroom and instructions on how to run your own tournament in your classroom or school.
  • 1 Team Meeting Guide:  This printed comprehensive guide provides facilitators with guidance and lesson plans on how to run 12 sessions and end with a culminating celebration. It includes student outcomes, tips, cleanup pointers, and checkpoints to monitor the team’s progress. >View a sample

  • 4 Robot Game Rulebooks:  These printed guides provide facilitators and students with everything they need for the RePLAYSM robot game. Each guide contains field set-up instructions, descriptions of each mission, and the rules student teams must follow during the preparation, action, and scoring. 
  • 3 RePLAYSM Challenge Sets:  Themed field mats and exclusive sets of LEGO® elements to build season-specific mission models

In FIRST Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. The FIRST Tech Challenge program offers students opportunities to develop technical STEM and holistic skills through competition and career-ready practices. Throughout this year-long course, students will create a robot and utilize tools for self-growth in technical skill development and engineering design thinking. Each semester of the course culminates in an event where students present what they’ve learned and use their robot to compete in a class mini-game.

The scope and sequence of this year-long course can be adjusted based on student needs and flexible to coincide with a competitive qualifying season or independent classroom experience.
